Our Story

Our family has been a part of a multi-generational ranching operation since the 1820s, starting in Oklahoma and eventually moving to California. Raising animals was no unfamiliar task to our family, for it is deeply rooted in our history. When we found out that there was property for sale practically across the road from the ranch where my great-grandfather had worked, we knew we could not pass on the opportunity. One short move from Bakersfield to Glennville, and we were back closer to our family than ever.

Marinated on the Hoof began with a single cow, an idea, and someone just crazy enough to give it a shot. Reed Lovan, my father, was that someone; however, his vision could never have come to life without his amazing wife Monica Lovan. The Lovan family has always enjoyed fun friendly competition especially when it came to the annual New Years cookoff, so it is only fitting that his idea came from such. After years of always coming in second, he finally decided he needed something special that no one else would have. And in typical Lovan fashion, if he couldn’t find what he wanted, he might as well just create it himself.

Reed had enjoyed returning to the mountain life establishing the Lovan Ranch in 2014, but he decided it was time to add a cow into the family. Not just any cow. A cow that he would be pasture raised and finished on grain and wine to create the perfect meat for the cooking competition. I helped pick her out and I named her Mignon. About 12 months later and many awkward trips to the grocery store to buy every box of wine they had, Mignon was finally ready. The incredulous looks and quiet giggles when we told people we were feeding a cow wine had finally paid off. The meat turned out better than our family could have ever expected. It wasn’t until after the competition and the family praises that he realized this could be more than just one cow.

Starting that day forward we have made it our mission to make the best product possible while keeping the small family business experience. We want to make sure each and every animal gets the most humane and comfortable life possible. From the quality of feed and wine to the country music sessions with the cows at breakfast our animals are treated with love and kindness. Running a cattle farm is no easy task, but spending time with family, which includes our five labs, while feeding always makes the work feel like fun. It is easy to make products that others will love when you love what you do. We can only hope that meals served with our meat will be filled with family, friends, laughter, and stories with care you can taste in every bite. From our farm to your table, Marinated on the Hoof will give you nothing but the best in every way.
